Context (CMS Context)
Mervyn Street (1950-) is affiliated with Gooniyandi, one of the two river groups from the country around Fitzroy Crossing, a key art centre in northwestern Western Australia. He was born at Louisa Downs Station and is an accomplished author, illustrator, carver and painter. He is author of an illustrated book entitled ‘Know Your Granny’ and uses his artwork extensively in the local Yiyili School where he also teaches Gooniyandi, the traditional language.
His figurative art conveys the lives of Aboriginal workers on the vast cattle stations of the northwest, recalling particularly the 1950s and 60s, when his mother was a station cook and his father a stockman. Mervyn has featured in ABC TV films recalling this period in recent Aboriginal history, that is simply and engagingly evoked in his art.
