Context (CMS Context)
Susie Bootja Bootja (1935-2003) was one of the earliest and most prominent painters of Walayiriti Artists, the Balgo Hills arts group that emerged to great acclaim in the 1980s. She was known for exuberant paintings combining traditional and western iconography and for an inventive personal style that shifted from year to year. This print features her country - not the empty desert the landscape might appear to be, from a European perspective - but land featuring waterholes, campsites and human life.
