Context (Amendments / updates)
A large roll of barkcloth, numbered Z 6267 was located in 2005.
T. Cadbury, 18/3/2005, noted that 'The number given to this object does not correspond with the description in the Accessions Book.' And that the object field formerly read "Tapa Cloth", while the "Place" field formerly read "Fiji; Polynesia; Asia'.
The barkcloth was described as.'Huge barkcloth, will be examined during Easter 2005. F. Veys 26/1/2005', and 'Fiji display case 33.18.' but unfortunately this did not appear to happen. However, Z 6267 is actually a bone armlet from the Solomon Islands. The provenance and correct accession number of the barkcloth noted above is unclear.

Context (Analysis)
Research for the Artefacts of Encounter Project (2010-2013) suggests this may have been collected by George Bennet in the Society Islands and come to MAA via Sheffield Museum. Bennet describes being presented with a 'great bundle of native cloth, as much as three men could lift'

Context (Acquisition Details)
Probably this is the 'great bundle of native cloth, as much as three men could lift' given to George Bennet and his colleague, Daniel Tyerman, during a visit to the house of Chief Manaonao at Papeete, Tahiti. Bennet and Tyerman were waited on by a large number of people with gifts: ‘There were five hogs, a great bundle of native cloth, as much as three men could lift, and a large quantity of cocoa-nuts, bananas and mountain plantains.’ See Artefacts of Encounter pg 198.
