Description

Stirrup-spout vessel of red ware, depicting a monkey. Formed of a round, slightly biconical body with slightly curved base; with a. thick stirrup handle and flared spout with simple rim. A monkeys head projects from the bottom of one end with bent arms stretched out; the other handle has a raised ring, the rear legs and a curling tail in relief on the body. Slightly burnished, small chip to rim.

Context (Analysis)
In his bequest schedule, Prof. Richard Keynes writes that this object was: 'Catalogued by Sotheby's (Lot 308, 27.vi.77) as Chimu, but from Bushnell 'Ancient Arts of the Americas' Fig. 148, is in Salinar style, later centuries BC. Formerly in Vize Collection, sold at Sotheby's to the Pitt-Rivers Museum in May 1888 as Lot 407.'
