Biography of the artist as recorded on the certificate of provenance accompanying the print:
"Nina was taught to paint by her father, Romauld Puruntatmeri. As a 14 year old, she would come home from school and work with him, painting his spears. Nina has worked at both Nguiu Adult Education and the Munupi Arts & Crafts doing bark painting and screen printing. She now lives at Pirlangimpi and works on canvas, etchings, linocuts and bark paintings. In 1993 Nina won the award for New Medium at the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in Darwin, providing recognition for her skills in etching. Nina has 4 children.
Nina's father, Romuald [sic] Puruntatameri, is represented in the Museum and Art Gallery of Northern Territory Collection. Her grandfather, Paddy Teeampi Tepomitari Puruntatameri, and her aunt, Rosina Puantulura, both carvers, are represented in the Melbourne Museum Collection."

"This design depicts the Kulama ceremony of the Tiwi people: the dancers and singers create a circle and prepare the poisonous yam for eating, as indicated by the circles in the painting. It is a celebration of life and food, the Kulama occurs at the end of the wet season."

Presented by The Art Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. An acquisition project to build a collection of modern and contemporary work on paper from Australia, Canada and South Africa was undertaken over 2011-13 with the support of a grant under The Art Fund's RENEW programme. The collection was developed with the expert advice and generous assistance of Annie Coombes and Norman Vorano in relation to South African and Inuit artists respectively. Khadija Carroll, Anita Herle and Diana Wood Conroy also contributed to the selection process. A certificate of provenance is available for this print.

Print titled 'Kulama Design'.
Edition no. 19/20. Print of a woodcut on very thin paper, The semicircles on either side are printed in concentric lines of yellow and red ochre tones. The hourglass shape in the middle is in dark brown covered with white dots. In the middle of this hourglass shape three circles are visible in a vertical line. The top one is yellow, followed by two orange circles. The circles are surrounded by yellow/white lines.The print has 'Nina. Puruntatameri' written underneath it in pencil and the number 19/20 appears in the left hand corner in pencil. The right hand bottom corner has a watermark in the shape of a rudder.
Condition: very good.
