Context (CMS Context)
Catalogue card 1 reads [handwritten in black ink:] 'Z-5229 A-H Eddystone Islands Solomon Islands 8 Bamboo musical instruments[.] A-B. Bassoon - for description see Z 5225 A.B [illegible word crossed out in black ink] C-D. Pair of flutes[.] E Single flute[.] F Bamboo for making flutes[.] G.H. Pair of flutes[.] The flutes in pairs are attached when not cracked C.&D. W.H.R. Rivers'. [Two red circular stickers top right of catalogue card.]
Catalogue card 2 reads [handwritten in black ball point:] 'Z 5229 A-H SOLOMON ISLANDS 8 Bamboo musical instruments Rivers Colln'.
Note all bassoons are made up of two parts, which are lashed together and played together but have been assigned A & B on the catalogue card. For the purpose of recording these objects the longer bamboo has been allocated Z 5229 A and the shorter bamboo Z 5229 B, as the objects had not labelled accordingly. [Heather Donoghue 27.06.2012]

Description (CMS Description)
Bamboo Bassoon made from two pieces of bamboo. These are now separated but were originally tied together at one end with vine, which is missing. This is the smaller of the two (Z 5229 B) consists of two sections of thin blackened bamboo originally joined together in the centre and covered with Parinarium nut paste but now separated. The bamboo node seals the bottom of the instrument and the top has an inserted mouthpiece made from a short length of narrow diameter bamboo inserted into the main tube, then sealed with Parinarium nut paste. Context (Analysis)
Object viewed by Tim Thomas 27.06.2012 who notes 'Njo...' could read 'Njoni' a Simbo man. The number 429 probably refers to page 429 in A.M Hocart's field notes, however this page is missing'.
