Description (CMS Description)
Circular woven basket made from un-dyed coconut or pandanus leaf. Square plaited horizontal twill base with frond-like ends inside the basket where the base has been inserted. A band of diagonal chequer plaiting extends around the base followed by a band alternating between horizontal and vertical twill plaiting. The sidewall has four sections each divided by a band of vertical plaited twill; two sections are plain horizontal twill and two sections are horizontal twill with overlay forming diamonds. Above this two thin bands of horizontal twill enclose a band of vertical plaited twill separated at intervals by reflected barava motifs (opposing triangles with the apex facing inwards). The rim of the basket is formed from a band of wider horizontal plaited twill. There is a small hole near the base on one side and the basket is slightly misshapen. (Heather Donoghue 25.06.2012)
