An old rectangular museum label glued to the shaft reads: '(Bt Mrs Bartholomew, 1908), and, [added later:] 'NO NUMBER / NO LOCALITY', and [added later in pencil:] 'SOLOMON IS'. 'Z 5173' inscribed in black ink on the shaft.

[From catalogue card:] 'Wooden paddle - pointed blade, lacking a handle ornament. One side of blade -anthropomorphic figures in black and dull red. One side fish or crocodile figure in same colours.'

Description (CMS Description)
Paddle of wood, light in colour. Long leaf-shaped blade, tapering towards the tip. On one side decorated with a ?crocodile, on the other with a human figure. In both cases, the motifs are raised from the blade and decorated with black and red pigments. The tip of the blade is also coloured red on one side and decorated with scrolls on the other. The shaft is oval in section. A large nail goes through the top of the shaft.
