Context (CMS Context)
This paddle was originally recorded as coming from New Britain (cf. MAA's acquisition register), but does not give any further information about the collector or donor. This type of paddle is, however, very reminiscent of those from Bougainville and Buka Islands. These locations have been added to the 'place' field to reflect this.

Description (CMS Description)
Large dance paddle of light wood, burnt to create a black surface. The motifs are created by carving out the space around them to retrieve the light coloured wood. One the blade, figure of a man squatting, hands touching the ears. Very large handle, rectangular in shape and carved with a human face.
