Description (CMS Description)
Thin fragment of fretwork pearl shell. Two narrow horizontal bands with serrated exterior edges enclose an openwork ring motif. Both bands terminate at one end in an oval with the bottom band also curving upwards to a broken rectangular projection, which extends horizontally from the bottom of the oval. The oval termination has a rough openwork circular shape near the top and resembles a frigate bird head with an incised eye on the pearl-side of the shell and a small triangular projection or beak. The pearl-side of the shell is covered in linear striations and part of the bottom band and ring motif appear to have broken away and been glued back together. [Heather Donoghue 12.06.2012]
