Description (CMS Description)
Wickerwork shield made from cane and woven with vine; narrow at the top and wide at the base. The shield is wrapped in Pandanus leaves, which have been sewn together with vine to form a package. The Pandanus is fraying and deteriorating around the edges on both sides. On the reverse, Pandanus leaves have been folded over and tucked beneath the shield handle to form a padded support and the handle has been wrapped in vine. A cord made from twisted plant fibre is tied around the handle. The top part of the wickerwork shield is visible on the reverse of the package; a band of twill work forms a border around the shield, which is woven in un-dyed and black vine around a cane frame. The black vine forms a V shape pattern at the top of the shield with cross-shaped pattern beneath. [Heather Donoghue 30.06.2012]
