Wickerwork shield made from cane and woven with vine; it is narrow and tapering to a point at the top and wide at the base. The reverse of the shield is covered in Pandanus leaves, which have been sewn together with vine to create a panel with a v shaped tip. The edge of the panel is fraying and deteriorating. A layer of Pandanus leaves has been tucked beneath the handle to form a padded support and the handle has been wrapped in plant fibre. The front of the shield is uncovered and made from a cane frame woven with un-dyed and black vine. The black vine forms a forked motif at the base of the shield with a band containing un-dyed squares running horizontally across the shield above this with a small vertical rectangle in the centre. A V shaped motif with a diamond shaped projection at the top of the shield leads to an arch with a horizontal band beneath. This band is decorated with an un-dyed square and two horizontal un-dyed lines at each end. [Heather Donoghue 30.06.2012]

A label attached to the shield reads [handwritten in black:] 'No Lost [crossed out] ALMOST CERTAINLY 198 A or B'. For the purposes of recording these objects the larger shield from the pair has been allocated Z 198 A and the smaller shield Z 198 B. [Heather Donoghue 30.06.2012]
