Josephine Hanson’s husband was doing teacher training in Kano in 1973. Wives were not allowed to work, but she had a network of Hausa and Fulani friends from an earlier visit she had made pre independance when staying with relatives. Her uncle was head of adult education and they used to go “on tour” to Southern Zaria.

Description (Physical description)
Large bowl-shaped gourd decorated with white pigment on its rim and black engravings. The black engravings are organised in the three rows going around the bowl. The bottom row consists of geometric motifs while the top rows are have both geomtric and objects and animals which are depicted in a stylised manner. The bands are separated from each other by geometric motifs. One can recognise planes, fish, four-legged mamals, etc.. There is a hole through which a metal thread goes. While the outside of the gourd is shiny brown, the inside looks more of a dull brown/beige.

Description (Physical description)
Large bowl made from a hollowed gourd or calabash. Decorated with incised panels depicting animals, objects and people, surrounded by geometric borders and repeating motifs; panels include a fish, antelope, lizard, plane, combs, birds, scissors, bicycle, turtle and chameleon; band of white pigment around the rim. Large crack from rim to base; hole drilled near rim.
