Context (Field collection)
The herding apron was given to the donor Josephine Hanson by Dawabe Abayin. Josephine Hanson’s husband undertook teacher training in Kano in 1973. Wives were not allowed to work, but she had a network of Hausa and Fulani friends from an earlier visit she had made pre-Independance when staying with relatives. Her uncle was head of adult education and they used to go “on tour” to Southern Zaria, where she met Dawabe Abayin, who had learnt to read and write via her uncle’s classes. He then learnt English through the radio. Dawabe lived in a camp and could be contacted via the Adult Education Office at Zonkwa, his nearest town.

Description (Physical description)
Leather apron decorated with rows of cowrie shells, metal coins with holes, metal rings and green stones. The bottom edge of the apron has leather fringes.
