Description
Gamuts. Man’s headdress of red velvet decorated with beads and pig or boar tusks. Body of headdress consists of sturdy upright band, raised at front. Reverse secured with plaited and woven ties in red, yellow and green synthetic wool. Exterior sides decorated with beads in muted orange, greens and blue arranged geometrically with a central band of diamond motifs. Two circular, concentric layers of same beads arranged in chevrons, encircled by tusk tips (one missing), at front; ground conus shell disc with multicoloured bead attached to centre. Aluminium chain stitched along top and bottom of beaded front and sides.

Special bead in the centre, like the ones on the necklace, are the most valuable; these kinds of beads became dominant for Paiwan and were sold quite commonly.

Man’s costume (2007.473 - 2007.477) presented to Rev. Whitehorn and his first wife, Elizabeth Hope Grant Whitehorn, by the churches of north-western Paiwan territory in 1969. The costume was probably made by people from the north and western side of the territory.

Description (Physical description)
Man’s headdress, with base of red velvet decorated with green, yellow, black and orange beads. The front of the object has a two- layered ornament/disks consisting of the same beads and 33 tusks, whereas the longer ones are situated at the rim of the bottom disk and the smaller wild boar tusks as well as beads and a shell are arranged as a second layer/disk on top of the first and bigger one. The beadwork is embraced by an aluminium chain. There are four fabric straps at the back.The outer disk is missing one tusk which is kept in an envelope. [Envelope and tusk not seen.
