Man’s costume (2007.473 - 2007.477) presented to Rev. Whitehorn and his first wife, Elizabeth Hope Grant Whitehorn, by the churches of north-western Paiwan territory in 1969. The costume was probably made by people from the north and western side of the territory.

Description (Physical description)
Man’s headdress. Base of black velvet with an attached band decorated with beadwork, cowrie shells and pig skin with its hair sewn on. Attached to the front of the headdress is a circular ornament consisting of eleven tusks on the edge, with shells and yellow, green and orange beads in a triangular design. In the centre of the ornament are a shell and a large bead. A pig’s tail is attached vertically at the front of the headdress, with four wool strips/tassels at the back.

Description (Physical description)
Gamuts. Man’s headdress of black velvet, glass beads, pig or boar skin and tusks. Body of headdress consists of sturdy upright band wrapped in velvet, reverse secured with plaited ties in red, yellow and green synthetic wool. Lower exterior decorated with band of cowrie shells, enclosed top and bottom with bands of muted orange and green beads; small repeated triangles of dark green beads run along top band. Upper front and sides covered with pig or boar skin with coarse brown upright hair; pig or boar tail extends upright from centre front. Circular ornament at centre front of muted green and orange beads in alternating triangular pattern, encircled by eleven large tusks, with conus shell disc at centre; further small multicoloured bead at centre of conus disc.
