Woman’s costume (2007.466, 2007.467, 2007.470, 2007.471 and 2007.472) presented to Rev. Whitehorn and his first wife, Elizabeth Hope Grant Whitehorn, by the churches of north-western Paiwan territory in 1969. The costume was probably made by people from the north and western side of the territory.

Description (Physical description)
Long belt-shaped woman’s headdress. The base of black velvet is decorated with geometric designs of beads, interrupted by cowrie shells. A metal chain, (possibly aluminium) is running along the rim. Three groups of pigs’s tusks are arranged in the centre. They are attached to the main part by another embroidered velvet strip. The two outer groups consist of six tusks (one of the central, outer tusks is cracked), whereas the one in the centre consists of eights tusks. Attached to both ends are two yellow strips made from synthetic cloth used for fastening the belt. At the back are further blue, red, black, yellow and green strips of synthetic cloth.

Gamuts. Woman’s headdress of black velvet decorated with pig or boar tusks. Central row of cowrie shells stitched along front with bands of pink, blue, green and yellow glass beads above and below, arranged into geometric patterns. Decorative metal chain stitched along front top and bottom. At front centre, three groups of outward pointing tusks: four tusks at centre, and three tusks in groups either side. Tusks wrapped in vertical black velvet bands with rows of red, yellow, green and white beads. Two mustard-yellow synthetic ties either side with further tassels below, stitched on reverse, in green, black, blue, mustard and red. Reverse also black velvet.
