Context (Production / use)
This tool is used to make 'zisha' teapots in the Jiangsu Province of China. Cf. 2004.183, 2004.184, 2004.185, 2005.30, 2005.31, 2005.32, 2005.33.

The wedge of wood (B) on the top of the axis (C) can be removed and replaced to vary its length.
The base (D) is used in some cases to avoid marking the clay when using the tool. Potters often make their own tools, but this example was made by a specialist pottery tool maker.
The tool is used to cut leather-hard clay disks. The flattened clay is placed on a wooden disk and turned with the left hand whilst the right hand holds the tool in place.
