Sold in Syarikat Rhino, souvenir shop, #54 Main Bazaar, Kuching. Probably made in a Bau village. The archetypal ‘ Bidayuh tambok’, known in the Bau area as a jumuo. Very likely to have been made in a Bau area village, or a culturally similar one just across the border in Kalimantan (Indonesia). Kuching’s Main Bazaar is the city’s main tourist shopping stretch, filled with souvenir shops, art and antique galleries and travel agents. Despite this, local ‘ethnic’ objects such as this remain relatively cheap – their prices consonant with village prices – and are generally of the same make and quality as those currently made and used in villages. Some of their stock is made in villages in neighbouring Kalimantan (Indonesia), however; but this is not always reflected in shop descriptions.

Description (CMS Description)
Medium-sized tightly woven basket made of rattan (wi), sugar palm frond(nuat) fibre and stripped bark. Vertical weave. Upper third is finer and lighter than the dark-coloured bottom. A vertical roris (diagonal) pattern runs down the body. Bark strap (suong boyuh) is attached to the ‘ear’ (kojit)
