Sold in Syarikat Rhino, souvenir shop, #54 Main Bazaar, Kuching. Probably made in a Bau village. The archetypal ‘ Bidayuh tambok’, known in the Bau area as a jumuo. Very likely to have been made in a Bau area village, or a culturally similar one just across the border in Kalimantan (Indonesia). Kuching’s Main Bazaar is the city’s main tourist shopping stretch, filled with souvenir shops, art and antique galleries and travel agents. Despite this, local ‘ethnic’ objects such as this remain relatively cheap – their prices consonant with village prices – and are generally of the same make and quality as those currently made and used in villages. Some of their stock is made in villages in neighbouring Kalimantan (Indonesia), however; but this is not always reflected in shop descriptions.

Medium-sized tightly woven basket. Vertical weave. Upper third is finer and lighter than the bottom and decorated with geometrical shapes as well as ririt (diagonal feature just below the rim) and boton (‘eye’); darker vertical strips (ronen) run all the way down the body. Bark strap (suong boyuh) is attached to the ‘ear’ (kojit)
