(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collectorSold in Thien Seng, souvenir shop, #48 Main Bazaar, Kuching. Probably made in a Serian or Padawan village. Basket described by vendor as a ‘Bidayuh’ basket made ‘locally’ – based on its design, this was probably in a Serian or Padawan village. Kuching’s Main Bazaar is the city’s main tourist shopping stretch, filled with souvenir shops, art and antique galleries and travel agents. Despite this, local ‘ethnic’ objects such as this remain relatively cheap – their prices consonant with village prices – and are generally of the same make and quality as those currently made and used in villages. Some of their stock is made in villages in neighbouring Kalimantan (Indonesia), however; but this is not always reflected in shop descriptions.

Description (CMS Description)
Small tightly-woven basket of rattan (wi), bamboo (tring) and sugar palm frond (nuat) fibre. Typical of those found among Bidayuhs in the Serian and Padawan areas, Sarawak. Alternating red and yellow stripes lined with black; black arrows lining the top just below the rim (suba). Back board made of sago leaf. Bark strap attached to ‘ear’ (kejit), which is made of a strip of plastic cord. Bamboo frame is secured with fine plastic cord; raffia cord further secures the open top.
