(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector Bidayuh, Kalimantan Dayak. Also made by other Sarawakian groups. Bought in Serikin, a Bidayuh bazaar at the border of Indonesian Kalimantan (Kalimantan Barat) and Malaysian Sarawak. Made for sale by Jagoi-Babang Bidayuhs (officially known in Indonesia as ‘Dayak’) near the border in Kalimantan Barat. c.2005 Commonly found in Bidayuh households. Often used in events of note, e.g. Christian prayer sessions, adat Gawai rituals. Serikin is a popular bazaar catering to Sarawakians and visitors from West Malaysia. It is an important source of woven objects – especially mats – from Dayak villages in next-door Kalimantan Barat. Their makers are culturally and historically very similar to the Sarawak Bidayuh, speaking the same dialect (Jagoi). The omok bemban is commonly made and found throughout Sarawak.
