Description
Sirindak. Broad-rimmed conical sun-hat, with red and blue decorations. Simpler design (recurs 4x) is traditional bunga pinada (pinada flower); more complex design (2x) is maker’s own (she calls it bunga modern – although it’s also a classic Malayic motif e.g. found on songket). Rim made out of rattan. On the underside is a protruding bamboo (pisah) loop (burang) to fit the wearer’s head.

(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector. Made to order by Mijot anak Ridoh, Kampung Segong. Colour blue is a relatively recent development made possible by the availability of paint; prior to this only red, yellow and black natural dyes were available.
