Context (Production / use)
(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector. Previously worn by girls and women in adat Gawai rituals, now part of a larger ‘cultural’ clothing ensemble (modelled loosely on the original). Many (Christian, modern) Bidayuh girls and women now have their own Gawai outfit, for use on ‘cultural’ or village-based occasions like Gawai Sawa (the new year), ethnic themed beauty contests and dances, etc. The hawk bells (grunung) jangle with movement, and are especially useful during Gawai processions or dances.

Description (Physical description)
Gawai skirt. Knee-length black skirt with nylon elastic bunched waistband and frontal pleat (for ease of movement). White, red and gold trimmings (rickrack) at the bottom, as well as several old hawk bells (grunung).
