Context (Production / use)
(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector Made to order by Sumuk Louis, Kampung Benuk. Previously worn by girls and women in adat Gawai rituals, now part of a larger ‘cultural’ clothing ensemble (modelled loosely on the original). Many (Christian, modern) Bidayuh girls and women now have their own Gawai outfit, for use on ‘cultural’ or village-based occasions like Gawai Sawa (the new year), ethnic themed beauty contests and dances, etc.
