Context (Production / use)
(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector. Previously worn by girls and women in adat Gawai rituals, now part of a larger ‘cultural’ clothing ensemble (modelled loosely on the original). Many (Christian, modern) Bidayuh girls and women now have their own Gawai outfit, for use on ‘cultural’ or village-based occasions like Gawai Sawa (the new year), ethnic theme beauty contests and dances, etc. Unlike some earlier sepiya, this one does not have coins or hawk bells (grunung) attached to the hem of the flap. Rm 150 for the whole outfit (three pieces). Bought 07/08/05.
