Description
drum - Long, straight circular drum with hollow base. Body is made of durable, varnished bamboo; sheepskin cover is held in place by woven rattan (wi perdoi) and plastic wire. ‘Tuned’ by little wooden blocks (dop) stuck into the lower circumference of the rattan holder.

(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector Made to order by Roji anak Sengges (Babai Gaut), Kampung Benuk. The small portable version of the gendang jobat, which comes in several sizes, the largest of which can extend to over a foot in length. Unlike the gendang bana, this drum is used in adat Gawai rituals, e.g. for the procession (brejang grindang) round the bamboo altar (sangar) and when ‘fetching’ the rice spirit from the river. The larger version is usually stored and played in the Panggah / Baruk (Bidayuh meeting hall and head-house), where key men’s rituals are held. Can be beaten with hands or with wooden sticks. Can be played solo (usually accompanied by gongs) or in pairs.
