Description

drum - Short circular drum, made of wood from the jackfruit tree (tabang dak), sheepskin drum cover; rattan (wi perdoi, wi segoh). (A)- drum with hollow base, tapering inwards towards the bottom. Held together with strips of rattan (B-C) (wi perdoi) and reinforced with blocks of wood (D)(dop). ‘Tuned’ by an inner, removable strip of rattan (wi perdoi) on the inside of the drumskin as well as the wooden blocks.

(Bio): Liana C.L. Chua, female collector Made to order by Roji anak Sengges (Babai Gaut), Kampung Benuk. Collected by Liana Chua. Bidayuh. Also made by other Sarawakian groups. Originally a Malay instrument, introduced to Bidayuh villages by local Malays and Javanese c. early 20th century. Accompaniment to singing (by women) and dancing, unlike the longer cylindrical gendang jobat, which was used for certain rituals. Still a popular form of entertainment among the older generation; often played in pairs or small groups. Sizes vary. Comes with 2 extra strips of rattan and some wooden blocks. 05/07/05.
