Context (Production / use)
‘Material: made from Telie wood (Terminalia catappa, so-called “tropical almond” and oiled with lolo tonga (Tongan oil - coconut - cocos nucifera). Construction: cut from central trunk of a small tree (heartwood yellowing visible on upper face).
Main shape formed with chainsaw, electric planer, bevel-edgesd chisels, orbital sander. Surface decoration executed with a pyrograving tool. Oiled.
Artist: Leonati Fakatava (male), Utulangivaka village, southern Neiafu, Vava’u island, Tonga.
Executed work 2004-2005, but pyrograving completed 23/3/2005. Apa’apai type (flat end, rhomboidal head, cylindrical handle), A.Mills, 29/11/2005’

Description (CMS Description)
Club with flat end and rhomboidal head and cylindrical handle. The head is inscribed on each side with kupesi designs called efu, ve’etuli, amoamokofe? and with two humans, two turtles and two dolphins on each side. Butt is signed “Leonati”.
