Context (Field collection)
Collected by Dr Sander Ernst van der Leeuw between July and August 1991. Pottery from following villages have been studied in the region of Michoacan: Capula, Tzintzuntzan, Colonia Lazaro Cardenas, Santa Fé de Laguna, Huancito, Patamban and San José de Gracia. The number S.J.G.-91/1A; S.J.G.-91/1B most certainly refer to the village San José de Gracia.

Description (Physical description)
A: Green round pot. B: Lid sculpted with flower and bird.A: Pot is covered on the outside with a green glazing. It stands on three triangular legs. The relief decoration consists of short spikes which cover four fifths of the pot. The inside of the pot is also glazed, but has an orange brown colour. B: The lid is also covered in a dark green glazing. There is a big three-dimensional flower in the middle with a bird in its centre. Four leaves of the flower are bent downwards in such a way that they form four handles. The inside of the lid is unglazed.

Green pot (A) with lid (B). A: Round pot with circular rim and spiky exterior. Pot stands on three triangular legs. Brown interior. B: Circular lid with scalloped rim and decorative protrusion at top. Decoration consists of a three-dimensional flower with a bird in the centre. Four of the flower leaves turn downward, creating handles for the lid.
