Description (CMS Description)
Fan woven from pandanus leaf strips. The handle is circular in section and bound with thin strips of straw-colour pandanus leaf, forming a grid pattern. At the end of the handle is a loop of very thin 3-ply plaited pandanus leaf. The head of the fan is formed of two circular discs of woven pandanus fibre. The edges have been folded to create a serrated effect. Traces of pink pigments are visible along the border. The central part is reminiscent of coiled basketry. Some of the fibres have been dyed dark and light pink. The outer edge of the central disc is decorated with a light pink chequered pattern. The central part of the disc is decorated with four dark pink crescents connected by their pointed ends. The pinks are very faded on one side (light damage?)
