Catalogue card 1 reads [stamped in black ink:] 'Z 2723 A-M FIJI'. [typed:] Viti Levu. Armlets of shell 12 in number, a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, j, k, l, m. ("Gato" Ngato. a, b, d, f, g, h, j, k, l in general use by girls and children, sometimes given by the former to their admirers, and, according to collectors belief, something of the significance of a wedding ring. Formed of the [blank] shell; manufactured as are the above mentioned by rubbing down the [blank] shell after it had been broken on a stone; c, e, and m (are called lavei) and are of a rougher and stronger make than the others; they are worn by the Kai Tholo men." 1 Maudslay, 10 Hugel, 1 Brady, circa 1875. See also Z-2941.'. A small round red sticker pasted on the card. [in pencil on the back of the card:] 'K. Roth does not know of the significance of the word "lavei", it is not in dictionary.' Description (CMS Description)
Circular bracelet carved from a piece of trochus shell. One of the rounded external edges lightly incised with notches. The other rounded edges incised with six segments of notches. Two lines drawn in pencil run longitudinally along the centre of the bracelet on the inner and outer surfaces. 'Z 2723 G' and '1923.H183.' inscribed in black ink inside the bracelet.
