Description
Kimono (きもの) or Haori (羽織). Short kimono or kimono jacket of cream silk decorated with gold and blue embroidery. Short robe, open at the front and flared towards the hem; front and back embroidered with cream chrysanthemums; cuffs, opening and hems embroidered with floral border in light blue, dark blue and gold thread; five toggle and loop fastenings with spherical gilded toggles; slits at either side from hem to waist.

Bought by Charles Thomas for his wife in Yokahoma in 1904, whilst touring the world by car with American millionaire Charles Jasper Glidden. Donated to the Museum by Sam McGrath-Thompson on behalf of Mrs. Laura Jepson, daughter of Charles Thomas.

Description (Physical description)
Off-white silk kimono with pale blue embroidery.This tunic-shaped wide-sleeved garment is embroidered with cream-coloured flowers on a cream-coloured background. All the edges (the neck-opening, the splits at the sides and the cuffs) are embroidered in light blue, dark blue and gold thread forming curvilinear motifs, half flowers and little dots. There are five buttons closing the top half of the garment. The buttons are in metal and have a relief pattern.The garment is lined with fine shiny cream-coloured silk.

Sue McGrath-Thompson wrote to the Museum offering a copy of her brother Andrew M. Jepson's book, 'Around the world in a Napier: The story of two motoring pioneers', (The History Press: 2013), which features 'the travels of [their] grandfather with the American Charles Glidden.
