Description

spirit catcher - ‘Instrument ‘for catching evil spirits’. A North American ‘dream-catcher’ has been incorporated into a Mongolian ritual artefact. The object is in the form of a mobile suspended from a metal ring of the sort used for key-rings. At the centre of the object is the ‘dream-catcher’ - a metal ring covered with a strip of hide and filled with a web formed of sythetic fibre threads. At the centre of the web is a natural-coloured wooden bead. Two feathers are attached to each side of the ring. The ring is suspended from a piece of bone which has been painted dark brown. This in turn is suspended from a disc made from what appears to be polished coconut shell. Feathers protrude from the top of the disc. From the ring at the centre of the object are suspended five metal tubes of the sort used in wind-chimes. A bunch of feathers is suspended from the central tube. All of the elements are attached together yellow synthetic thread, with wooden beads threaded onto this in several places.
