Description

Necklace, made of silver chain fasthening with a hook and eye. The body of the necklace consists of alternating granulated ’tut’ beads with long silver rectangular beads. From the long beads hang a metal loop in a figure of 8 shape and two small silver balls, in the centre of the figure of 8 is a small silver disc with granulation. From the centre of the necklace hang five silver discs with granulation, attached with a simple metal chain. The terminal beads are two silver spherical beads on either side of a semi-spherical bead. The whole is strung on green string.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Silver necklace comprised mainly of small, ornate, silver beads alternating with long, solid silver beads, each of which looks like four beads stacked on top of each other. The long beads terminating in jingles, and five pendants of filigreed discs. The whole is strung on green string. The necklace fastens with a hook and eye attached to lengths of chain.

Context (Analysis)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
