Description
Necklace, made of silver chain fastening with a hook and eye. From two large triangular pieces hang four strings of silver cubic beads interspersed with cubic orange beads, possibly coral, and small granulated silver beads or ’tut’ beads. From the lowest strand of beads hang flat silver oval pieces with stamped decoration and a silver ball attached to the lowest point. The four strands connect to a large rectangular amulet case, heavily decorated with granulation. From the larger amulet case hangs a second smaller cylindrical amulet case, or hirz, from which hangs four sets of a figure of 8 shaped loop and two bells.

The accretions found on this piece, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Heavy silver necklace, the main elements of which are: a large, rectangular amulet case decorated with lozenge-shaped granulated ornamentation and silver discs; a smaller capsule-shaped amulet case with large jingles, which dangles from the larger case; four strands of silver beads, some faceted and some granulated, inspersed with coral beads. The strings of beads are gathered together attached to a pair of triangular ornaments, one at each end, decorated with hand-made filigree decoration. The necklace is fastened by a hook and eye attached to lengths of chain.
