Description

Necklace, made of silver chain fasthening with a hook and eye. The body of the necklace consists of three strands of small coral beads and seed pearls, terminating in a conical silver bead. The strants are interupted roughly half way down by two round silver beads on either side of a silver granulated ’tut’ bead. At the centre of the necklace is a cylindrical amulet case or ‘hirz’, from which hang three silver balls on figure 8 shaped links.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Silver necklace-chain with three twisting chains of small coral and seed-pearl beads. These each terminate at each end in silver cone shaped beads. Mid-way down the strands of beads are elaborate silver beads. At the centre of the necklace is a silver, caspule-shaped amulet case with filigree decoration and from which three jingles are suspended. The necklace fastens with a hook and eye attached to lengths of silver chain.

Context (Analysis)
The accretions found on this and similar pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
