Description
Necklace, made of silver chain fasthening with a hook and eye. The body of the chain consists of seven cylindrical beads (possibly coral or plastic) on each end, then a long set of silver cylindrical beads with another four cylindrical orange beads in the centre. Below this string of beads, connecting to the chain roughly every three beads, are 14 Indian 1/4 rupee coins suspended from silver loops. The coins range in date from 1918 to 1936. From each coin hang two sets of two silver balls. In the centre of the necklace is a long cylindrical shaped amulet case, or hirz, from which hang four metal loops with each loop attached to two large silver balls.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Silver necklace-chain with silver beads and a row of ?coral beads at each end. From this main strand are suspended fourteen Indian 1/4 rupee coins, all dated 1918 or 1919. Large jingles dangle from each of these coins. A capsule-shaped amulet case is suspended at the centre. The necklace fastens with a hook and eye attached to lengths of silver chain.

The accretions found on this and similar pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
