Description

Necklace, made of silver chain fasthening with a hook and eye. The chain of the necklace consists of cylindrical beads, possibly amber, in various shades of orange and red. The central bead is larger. Between each bead is are two cubic silver beads, with a cubic and spherical bead on either side of the larger central bead.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Necklace with groups of small, faceted silver beads alternating with wide, disc-shaped beads of red and yellow amber. The beads are strung on white thread. The necklace fastens with a hook and eye attached to lengths of silver chain.

Context (Analysis)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
