Description

Necklace, made of silver chain fasthening with a hook and eye. The chain of the necklace consists of nine stone beads, eight of equal size with the middle bead larger. Between each stone bead is a silver spherical bead or ‘douggeh’. The chain terminates with a conical silver bead on each end, and before these cones and on either side of the larger middle stone is a bead of granulated silver or ’tut’.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Silver necklace-chain with large, silver, filigree-detailed beads, alternating with large stone beads in various shades of red. Each end culminates in a cone-shaped bead. The beads are threaded on nylon filament. The necklace fastens with a hook and eye attached to lengths of silver chain.

Context (Analysis)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
