Description

Neck ornament, sewn onto a padded collar of black, blue, purple and yellow cloth. Starting with a row of coral beads, then a row of conical silver beads suspended from the padding. These conical beads are overlaid with a disc of filigree decoration and two fan shapes, in between the two fan shapes is a second row of coral beading. The conical beads then finish with a loop of metal wire from which hang two silver balls.

Context (Acquisition Details)
Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Neck ornament. The chain is covered in padded black, blue, purple and yellow cloth. Sewn onto this padded collar is a row of coral beads. Suspended from the padding are silver metal cones, to which are attached hand-made filigree decorations in the form of a disc above two fan shapes - one above the other - separated by a second row of coral beads. At the very bottom dangle silver jingles. The cloth is dirty.

Context (Analysis)
The accretions found on this piece and others in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
