Description
Chain belt made of silver. Majority of the chain is made up of alternating pieces - two links sitting parallel, joined to one motif comprised of two diamond shapes with two circles on each end and soldered together to form a square. The parallel links join to the square pieces through the hoops linked to the diamond shapes. The two ends of this chain terminates in two pentagonal shapes decorated with silver balls and rivets. The belt is fastened with a hook and eye connected to a double chain of simple links.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Silver chain belt. The belt is comprised of a double chain with two strands of links running parallel to, and interlinking with, each other. The decorative part of the belt terminates at each end in a silver, pentagonal tab. These termini are decorated with small silver balls and rivets. The belt is fastened with a hook and eye, attached to lengths of chain which are less elaborate and comprised of two separate chains.

Context (Analysis)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
