Description

Silver kohl pot with separate lid and tool on chain. The kohl container is a tall, narrow lozenge-shape with a narrow neck and stands on a round base. It is decorated all over with figures of eight. The stopper is plain and is attached by a chain to the tool. The tool is held to the pot by slipping into two rings which are soldered onto the side of the container. Over half of the tool is covered by wire that has been twisted around it.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.
