Description

Silver kohl pot with lid and tool on chain. Ovoid container with two main design motifs. The first is comprised of two bands of simple curved scroll work, and the other involves two bands of half-spheres. The small lid is attached to the bottle with a small chain. The poker-tool is attached to the lid by a similar chain and is held in place next to the bottle by being inserted through a small coiled ring.

Description (Physical description)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.
