Description

Round silver box with separate lid which fits inside the rim of the body. The main design elements are created by using thin twisted wires and bending them into individual petal-like shapes, arranged in X-shaped designs on the box itself, and into inter-locking crescents on the lid. The lid is surmounted by a silver loop.

The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.
