Description

Oval silver box with fitted lid that is attached by a long chain. The main design motif on the body is a repeating leaf-like pattern, with small circles. Both elements are created using twisted wire to outline the shapes. The lid uses the same twisted wire to create simple flower-petal-like shapes which meet at a green, marbled stone which marks the centre.

The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.
