Description

Round silver box, with separate lid which fits over the top. This object is made of a brighter metal and cleaner, finer filigree work than some other examples in this collection. The main design element on the body of the box is comprised of an ‘S’-shaped motif. Above and below this, along the rims of the box, are two bands of scroll-work. The lid is decorated by a flower pattern which covers the entirety of the lid. The petals, which are outlined in filigree, each have a single ball attached within them, and they meet at a centre marked around a brown/white marbled ‘stone’.

Description (Physical description)
The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.
