The accretions found on pieces in this collection, in addition to the appearance of the silver, suggest to Anita Herle that the metal used is a mixture of silver and other metals, possibly among them copper.

Mrs. Barbara Spalding and her husband Michael worked as English teachers in Taiz, Yemen, from 1997-98 during which time she collected silver and talked to the men in the market silver shops.

Description (Physical description)
Silver box with hinged lid and handle. This is a moderately large oval box decorated with intricate, multi-layered filigree work, also in silver. The main design elements are eye-like elements and in-filled circles. The lid, attached by a hinge and clasp, also has two oval, black ‘stones’, probably glass, set on top. A thin, metal loop-shaped handle is attached to the lid. The clasp for securing the lid is inset with a clear, diamond-cut, reflective stone, possibly paste.
