Description

Ambalangoda. Mask, carved from wood and painted in black, white and a range of bright colours. The main, central part of the mask, represents a figure standing on top of a face. Both faces have protruding eyes and prominent teeth. The figure has outstretched hands and wears a head-dress formed of five cobras. There are four slots; the two top most allow the floral panel [2004.208 E & F] to be inserted and the two lower allow the panels of stacked heads [2004.108 B & C] to be inserted.

Mask in three parts, accompanied by a small wooden figure which balances on top of the its head-dress. The mask is carved from wood and painted in black, white and a range of bright colours. A: The main, central part of mask, representing a figure standing on top of a face. Both faces have protruding eyes and prominent teeth. The figure has outstretched hands and wears a head-dress formed of five cobras. A flower protrudes from each side of its head. B-C: Pair of large flat attachments, one of which slots into each side of the mask. Each piece is made up of nine faces, each of a different colour, a cobra and a flower. D: Small wooden figure which balances on top of the mask. The figure wears a yellow bikini and appears to be diving.

Mask accessory 2004.108 E-F. Floral panel, which fits into the side of the mask 2004.108 A. the floral is mostly orange with the tips of the petals white and the stamen red and black. There is a small wooden protrusion on the left of the flower, which allows it to be slotted into the side of the mask.

Figure 2004.108 D. Small wooden figure which balances in the outstretched hands of the figure, at the top of the mask. The figure wears a yellow bikini and appears to be in a diving pose, with the hands together and held behind the head.

Description for panel for the mask 2004.108 A. Large flat attachment, which slots into the side of the mask. Each piece is made up of nine faces, each of a different colour, which are encircled by black and grey cobra. Beneath the faces is a white and yellow flower with red and green foliage. Wooden protrusion to the right of the panel, which allows it to be inserted onto the mask.
