Context (CMS Context)
See de Souza’s report in UCMAA paper archives for further information about this object and its social context, together with fieldwork photographs relating to the object. The following information is summarized from the report: These are made by the same artisan who made the mats, but ‘the baskets are rarely ordered. Most Pute either buy them in town or use industrialised containers to store food. Most Agta women now how to weave baskets but the do it only for their own use, to store rice and/or small objects...’. The pink decoration is not typical - the artist “had taken a long time to dye some strips with pink artificial colour. This is not a common thing. She had to go and buy it in town, but I think she was very proud that I chose her to manufacture the objects for a museum “ta Inglaterra” amd wanted to have them beautiful’.
